Make Religion Like a Keychain - You'll Open Doors | The Muslim Blog

You may have noticed that the title of this article suggests that you should make religion “like a keychain.” But what does that mean? It all has to do with one of the main characteristics of a keychain: you take it everywhere you go.

The idea is that your keychain is attached to your keys, which you need to take everywhere. If you’re outside the house, then you’ll need them to get back in. You need them to enter the car and to exit it. And when you’re in the house, you might have some locked doors…even though you and your keys are technically in the same place: your house.

So like your keychain is attached to your keys, let Islam be attached to your lifestyle. Let the light seep into all areas of your life. It can be the key that will open doors and opportunities (like a real key).

There is an easy way to do this. You need to practice the skill of questioning yourself. Your life is like a car on a road. You are trying to go straight and make it to heaven but with enough curve on your car’s path, you might stray off the right path.  Repent a lot, and enjoy the feeling of starting fresh. Enjoy the great feeling of obeying Allah and let that feeling in on all the various areas of your life.

This will take some effort. Here are some ideas to get you started in ultimately staying on the right path:

1. If you feel like you have been neglectful in your religion before, set new goals for yourself. Aim to give more charity regularly, pray more and do athkar more. Listen to some Qur'an, and if you don't speak Arabic, maybe read the Qur'an's translation in your native language.

2. Try to get away from activities or people who you know are messing you up. If you have a group of friends or colleagues who you know are going to make it difficult for you to give more time to Allah, consider putting some distance between you and them or in general, just ensuring that they won't be an obstacle in your path to getting closer to Allah.

3. Try to get other people to encourage you in this. If you have a mosque near you, people there may be a great source of support to you in your journey. Maybe some family members or friends might encourage you to get closer to Allah. Even a person who is very religious may need a push sometimes, so ideally look for that person who can give you that push in your prayers and remembrance of Allah.

Let that feeling in and feel the happiness. Most likely, you won’t regret it. You might feel like it was one of the best things you did in your life.
