Why Islam Makes Sense | The Muslim Blog

It’s not an uncommon thing to hear the argument that Islam just “doesn’t make sense.” How is there a second life? How is there a heaven and a hell? "We don’t see it, so we don’t believe it” is the idea here. But what is the reality? Does this really  make sense? Let’s explore the matter.

Overview

  • Ultimately, there is nothing irrational about accepting a Designer of the universe. God created us. Our science is too primitive to see the Divine truth.

  • There is nothing irrational about God sending us a message in the form of the Qur'an. God created us and is testing us. The world is not absurd like absurdists say. 1 + 1 is 2 and you did not create yourself. God created you.

  • God sent us warnings - about this life and the next. Of course your actions have consequences. You live in a world which operates on logic, not a world where nothing matters.

  • God sent us warnings. He gave us the truth in the Qur'an - and it is a test. God has given you the truth and the opportunity to act on it. If you have refused to accept the truth - God has warned you.

  • Of course God will give us instructions on how to live our lives. The Qur'an tells us how to live and be good people, and is a practical guide for us. The deeper we go into this Book, the more we will realize that it was not a fabrication we can attribute to a human. It is a deep Book, with wisdom behind it we may never fully understand.
  • It is a Book that was revealed in 7th Century Arabia, a very different time from the 21st Century. But the Qur'an maintains the truth, no matter what the time period is. It is not edited to fit each time period. Humanity has a moral guide and an ethical code, not based on violence and harshness but purely on logic. It's name is the Qur'an.

  • Islam does not signify an absurd world. Of course not. And Islam is not the rejection of science. Islam is simply accepting the deeper reality of the world. Look into the world. Look into the universe. Do you see a greater design made by a greater Designer? Do you see God? He sees you.

  • Do you find it absurd that God sent messengers to guide you, and tested humanity by revealing the truth and seeing who will believe in it and who will not? What do you expect of God?

  • Islam is at its foundation structure and logic and clear dynamics for life. Over a thousand years ago, a man named Muhammad () found himself receiving messages from God, and this was his explanation for these messages. He was a man living in the 7th Century Arabian Peninsula. Interestingly, these revelations that he revealed would come to conquer the world and spread everywhere, as people in various times and places would read it and feel their hearts give in to the truth.

  • What Islam is and what some Muslims do are two very different things. Islam is logic. Some people use Islam to justify terrorism or despicable things, but this does not guarantee whatsoever that Islam is a system of life that has these traits. See this post for more information about misconceptions about Islam.

  • Ultimately, as I stated, Islam is nothing but logic. You have a cause, 0 ≠ 1 and 1 + 1 = 2, and your cause is God. Your Creator did not leave you alone in this world without guidance. Allah sent down guidance that is for you. Yes, it is for you. God did not leave you and many other people lost in this world without answers. You can find all your answers in the Qur'an.

Allah Himself addresses our uncertainties with clear logic:

أَمْ خُلِقُوا مِنْ غَيْرِ شَيْءٍ أَمْ هُمُ الْخَالِقُونَ
أَمْ خَلَقُوا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ ۚ بَل لَّا يُوقِنُونَ

Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]?

Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.

Atheist ideas can reject God (), based on the simple argument that we don’t see Him, so we can’t believe Him. But there’s more to it. God (has not simply left humankind utterly blind and with no savior but faith. Messengers were sent down to guide us.

It must be understood that Islam is not a system that rejects science. it is quite the opposite. It is not backwards, but at the height of advancement. The Qur’an is a book revealed 7th Century Arabia but a book that, if we look deeply into it, will be the guide that never dies and never ends. The guides for life that Islam sets down are truly the guides for a wonderful life - regardless of whether people actually follow them or not. Terrorism, misogyny, and many other accusations are thrown at Islam all the time. It is easy to accept them and dismiss Islam. It is difficult to stick to the facts.

That's the issue. the issue is that people don't see the Qur'an for what it is. It is not the rejection of science or the mistreatment of anyone. When observed carefully, it is a true guide to life. It is a marvelous book, revealed by a marvelous man, Muhammad ().

And this is not an irrational argument if we look at it carefully. It is true that the obvious facts must be observed from a logical viewpoint, but we must also look at the subtle clues. God ﷻ gave us clues. A line of men on this Earth began preaching monotheistic messages. Maybe later people misunderstood them, but these men were there. Islam acknowledges them all. What was bizarre about this? Nothing. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. On Earth, people wonder about where we came from and why we’re here. We find numerous people preaching a monotheistic message summed up in the Qur’an. This message is from our Creator ().

It’s easy to say that they just wanted power. But when we take a closer look, particularly at the life of Muhammad ﷺ, we can see that there’s more to it than that. We must observe their stories carefully, drawing from scholars and historical sources. If we do, what do we find? Something quite remarkable. See this talk for more linked information.

It’s that simple. Atheism is not an end. We all may be in doubt, but in the end, that same question arises: why are we here? Who put us here? The reality is that He sent us signs. A group of men. A line of men who suffered to preach the same monotheistic message. Among them were Muhammad(), Moses and Jesus (as). The question persists: why would these men give up everything to make people monotheistic? Why would Muhammad () accept Jesus and all the previous prophets? If he was a fake messenger, shouldn't he keep the glory to himself? The answer is simple: he wasn't getting his motivation from selfish needs, and his life demonstrates this. He was getting his motivation from an external Source. He was getting it from God ().

Islam is not the rejection of reason. It just accepts the natural order of things. Rejecting a Creator was always unnatural. All you need to do is go down into your heart. Push out everything you’ve taken for granted. Do you really see it as unreasonable to conclude that everything has a cause and our cause is God ﷻ?

The Qur’an is the true guide for life. All the things in it are the best for us and this is the reality.
Perhaps our science is too primitive to realize that. That is only our issue. Science continually changes with new evidence. The Qur’an does not. It was revealed at one time, and the things in it are forever the truth.

Of course it will rule people's daily lives and give us instructions in life. These are the best for us and the best way to live our lives, but the wisdom in them can be difficult to understand because of our limited knowledge.

That is why it is hard to accept it. As humans, we are in a primitive stage. The Qur’an comes and says things that are completely beyond us. It’s like we are in an age of ignorance and someone comes along with a book that is centuries ahead of us scientifically. How are we supposed to accept it? It is easier to reject it.

Everyone knows that the truth is hard to accept. If you go to a group of people in the 3rd Century CE and give them a book about 21st Century science, they'll think you're mad! They won't understand it, and the majority of them will reject it, because it is way beyond them. It will take them a very long time to slowly come to the conclusion that they were wrong and the book was right.

The Qur'an is exactly like that. It is a book that says the truth, no matter how far humanity is from discovering it. So naturally, it will be widely rejected at first.

And we can link this idea right back to the things being found in Qur’anic studies. The Qur’an is the ultimate guide to life that is applicable to all times and ages, right? So it should have an amazing structure. So what are people discovering from studying it? It is quite remarkable. Nouman Ali Khan and Raymond Farrin and others have noted the beauty of it. It is constructed like a beautiful piece of architecture, bountiful with ring composition and carefully placed words, sentences and themes. This is the "eternal living miracle of God", as one video by Dr. Yasir Qadhi is titled.

Life has a handbook. It’s called the Qur’an. Revealed so that it addresses the 7th Century Muslim, it addresses us in the 21st Century Muslim and will continue to be the eternal handbook of life.

The One who created us and may have created plenty of creations just like us is sending us a message. He is giving us the answers to the questions we always asked. He is giving us the information we always wanted, in a book that He revealed to humanity in the 7th Century, but that remains to live in people's hearts every day.

Rejecting God (is not something permanent, for the day will come when there is no more denial. But for now, in Allah’s Holy Book, the signs are clear. All it takes is a look into the Qur’an, where God (has assured us that the world we see was not made from nothing.
