Don’t Push Islam to the Sidewalk of Your Life. If you know that’s you, read on. | The Muslim Blog

I know that you might have your reasons for not praying, or considering religion to be the appetizer/side dish of life. But you may be missing on something huge, a great feeling and something that could change your life. Read on, because you never know, this might benefit you for years to come.

Here is a glimpse of the amazing benefits you can get from being religious:

Look around you and you will see everywhere that people want purpose and happiness. You see it in school, at work, in fictional characters and throughout the history of humanity. And the sad thing is, within Islam, God may have given those who care about their religion a great feeling of happiness and purpose (ask devout Muslims). Islam has this hidden satisfaction and pleasure within it, but you probably won't feel it unless you give more time to your Creator. It might be the solution to problems in your life you thought were unsolvable!

Getting closer to God can be a great thing in your life mentally. When you are in trouble, you always have Allah to turn to. If you were not very used to this before, you may not know this feeling and may be surprised at how great it feels. You might feel more at peace with yourself, because now you are living in the obedience of your Creator. And who can harm you when Allah is watching? Think about it.

But the question is, if you are a person who is not very used to the religious life, how can you start? The answer is, "it's easy."

Even if your family is not very religious, that does not mean you can't be religious. It's easy really. Consider these few steps:

1. Use the internet to your advantage.

If you want to learn to pray, look it up and you should find detailed instructions. If you are unsure whether something is halal or not, try looking it up. I warn you that some sources like islam qa will be kind of strict, but with experience you should find the speakers you are comfortable with. Personally I strongly reccomend you look up Dr. Yasir Qadhi and Nouman Ali Khan.

2. Start with the basics.

Just because you want to get a bit closer to God doesn't mean you have to become perfect all of a sudden. Take it easy. Maybe start by searching for morning and night athkar (remembrance of God) and then start listening to some Qur'an (there are some great websites like for that like quran.com) and eventually build up your prayer. As you fill your time with meaningful things like the remembrance of God, you may feel much better, about life in general. And it's easy! You just need to get started. Maybe read the Qur'an in Arabic (if you can) or in your native language, to get a taste of it. Listen to some recitations. It you like social media, subscribe to some Islamic pages or channels that you trust. Pray to Allah to make you closer to Him.

3. Try visiting a local mosque for more support

The internet is great and all, but visiting a mosque can give you a whole other experience. If you have one in your area (and you don't already go there for Friday prayers), then seriously consider this option. It can be very useful to talk to Muslims and sometimes scholars (if one visits your mosque) face-to-face.
