Athkar Tips | The Muslim Blog

This is something that is quite valuable if you learn to use it. It's something you can take with you at home, at school, work, or wherever you go, and if you learn to use it properly, it can really benefit you. It's not some electronic gadget. It's athkar and Qur'an, and trust me, if you use it properly, it can give you a great feeling and be a great source of good deeds for you. You won't know what it's like until you try it...for real.

In case you don't know, athkar is like remembrance of God. You have several prayers you can make, phrases you can repeat, and things like that asking God for things and glorifying Him. They are typically done before sunrise (morning) and before Maghrib (evening) and on other occasions. You can search for morning and evening athkar online.

These are very easy to do almost anywhere. You can download an athkar app and start going at it, or if you remember them you can even just say them without any aid.

I have noticed that they often do give you a great feeling. Personally, repeating subhan Allah wa bihamdih (سبحان الله و بحمده) or astaghfirul-Allah wa atubu illayh (استغفر الله و اتوب اليه)  can give me a great feeling that's kind of difficult to describe. It's like I know I didn't waste my time doing this activity. It's a calming activity too.

Qur'an is also a great source of calm and peace that you want to tap into. Just listening to a good recitation can have a beautiful calming, "healing" effect on you. I feel like it goes with calm and meditation. This is very useful.

Maybe you have not experiences these in full effect, but if you make them a part of your daily life, you may start to notice the benefits and wonder how you could have missed out on something so great!

Get Started

It's easy to get started. Consider these steps:

-Search and download an athkar app. You should be able to find many on the app store. Once you have one, try to say the athkar often so they will stick in your head and you will eventually not need the app. You can also just find a website with athkar (like this one) and screenshot it in order to have the athkar handy.

-If you have earphones or headphones around with you regularly, try downloading a Qur'an app on your phone and listening to some Qur'an. Especially when you feel like you need to listen to something to calm you down, Qur'an is a great option. Commutes, such as riding a car or bus to and from places, are great opportunities to listen to some Qur'an. Also, you can try listening to Qur'an before you sleep.
