Are Muslims Weird? | The Muslim Blog

Depending on who you are, you might view Muslims as a “weird” group of people. This may be due to Arab-Muslim stereotypes, or ideas spread by the media, or due to small groups who paint a certain picture of Islam. These are all like the outer covering of a banana. It is time to peel it away and get to the center of this banana – the truth about Islam. The question is, are you ready??

Now, any person who belongs to a certain culture may have a tendency to view other cultures as alien cultures, or bizarre cultures. In Islam’s case, terrorists have given it a bad image, even though these terrorists are no reference point when talking about the general Muslim population. In addition to this, people often refer to stereotypes about Muslims being backwards, uneducated, or uncivilized when evaluating them. Islam haters can sometimes take a negative image produced by a small group of people and try to stick this image to Muslims in general. As a result of all these things, consciously or subconsciously we may look at Muslims from the wrong viewpoint.

When a deeper look is taken at things in Islam, the truth can often reveal itself, especially regarding issues such as terrorism, where I emphasize the powerful stance Islam takes in providing justice, and the powerful stance many Muslims and Muslim scholars have taken in condemning terrorist groups like ISIS, as demonstrated in this Letter to ISIS.

If we search deep enough we might find some interesting things, such as:

·             Islam is ultimately strongly against terrorism, and no matter how conservative you are as a Muslim you will never become a terrorist unless you use very twisted interpretations of the Qur’an
·             Women in Islam are not necessarily oppressed, but the problem is that in some countries there is an oppressive culture that has almost nothing to do with religion, but religion takes the blame. People do not distinguish between religion and culture.
·             Despite all the things that people say about Muhammad (-peace be upon him), if we look at his life and actions in reference to his time period and the places where he lived, we see that the most logical explanation of his actions is not that he was a power-hungry or crazy man, but indeed a man who was receiving some form of external, divine motivation for his actions (specifically see this video for comprehensive detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0RynPuaxms). If you truly search for the truth about Islam, from the correct sources, you may be deeply surprised. If you want a place to start, consider looking at the post below which has further information about stereotypes about Islam.
