Being Sick | The Muslim Blog

Many people consider being sick to be something negative. Yes, it often will involve discomfort and pain, but being sick can bring you realizations that are extremely valuable.

Imagine yourself throwing up. Your stomach hurts and you are struck with nausea for a bit, causing you to squirm from the pain. Then, you throw up painfully. You have a short period of no pain. Then the nausea and stomach pain returns. This extremely discomforting and often painful cycle repeats itself several times. Your strength goes away and you don’t know when it will end.

This is a very uncomfortable situation. But it is a reminder. Now that  your strength has been taken away, you realize the value of every breath you take. Every breath and every second of your life you live without pain is a true blessing. You have been living your life unaware of this simple reality.

Every day, Allah (ﷻ) gave you huge blessings. Every part of your body that is fine is a blessing. Your ability to sleep is a blessing. Your eyes are a blessing. Your ears are a blessing. It’s like someone decided to give you a life’s worth of amazing gifts - even though He never had to.

Your health is also a tool. Allah (ﷻ) gave it to you and gave you the choice. You can use it to do good and obey Allah (ﷻ), or you can use it to do the same things that Allah forbade you from. Given the sheer amount and quality of the blessings that Allah (ﷻ) gives us every day, does it make any sense that we should use the body He gave us to disobey Him?

Perhaps we cannot be perfect, but we can repent. We can repent from our sins and vow to be better people, who use the power and blessings that Allah (ﷻ) gave us to do good, and to avoid doing that which He forbade.

Being sick also brings with it the realization that this life is not perfect. This life has hardships and pain and sickness, mixed in with some joy. But true joy is with Allah (ﷻ). Allah has sent Muhammad () with the Qur’an as a guidance. We have a book to guide us to the path. We have a book to guide us to the place where you won’t get sick. Heaven is with Allah (ﷻ). The devil will lead you to something much worse than these sicknesses in this life.
